Teeth whitening and sensitivity: what you need to know before deciding

By: Dr. Guillermo Trujillo

Many patients come to the clinic hoping to improve the appearance of their smile, but with a legitimate fear: tooth sensitivity. This is an issue that must be analyzed in detail because tooth sensitivity doesn’t just appear out of nowhere; it can be caused by various factors, including: worn enamel, receding gums, or, in many cases, improperly performed teeth whitening.

As a dentist in Mérida, I like to explain that teeth whitening uses a chemical compound that requires precision. If you already feel slight discomfort when drinking something cold or hot and I leave the gel on longer than recommended, we’ll trigger tooth sensitivity. That’s why the first thing we do is listen to you. If you tell me you’re already experiencing that sensation, we can adjust the application time of the compound so the process is comfortable for you.

If you decide to proceed with your treatment, I suggest you take these points into account to make the experience much smoother:

  • Use a desensitizing toothpaste: About two weeks before your appointment, start using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth; this helps "prepare" the enamel and reduce the response to the chemical compound.

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes: During the first 48 hours after whitening, try not to drink very cold or very hot beverages so as not to stress the tooth while it stabilizes.

“I went to Whiteline to get my teeth whitened. I can't say enough good things about this place. They are super friendly, competent, and easy to communicate with as an English speaker. Thank you so much to Eduardo for doing such a good job with my teeth, and for patiently answering all of my questions! Would recommend 100% for whitening and any other dental needs.”

It’s important to be realistic about your expectations: if you experience a couple of days of sensitivity after a whitening treatment, that’s a normal part of the process. However, if you’ve been living with constant sensitivity for years—to the point where even the air you breathe bothers you—my professional recommendation as part of our team of dentists in Yucatán is to reconsider the treatment and help you find other options that better suit your situation to improve your smile.

It's not just about aesthetics, but about not affecting your quality of life.
